Should The Curtains Touch The Floor?
Most of us enjoy using lovely new curtains to beautify our houses. We occasionally ponder whether our curtains should reach the floor when we do this. This question’s response is crucial since it may influence how we decorate.
Absolutely, curtains need to reach the floor. With a few exceptions, the appearance of the room will be more sophisticated and attractive the longer the curtains are. Because of this, most commonly found ready-made curtains are long.
Curtains and drapes are a great way to add color and pattern to a room without making a big investment. But if you’re wondering whether the curtains should touch the floor, there are several reasons why they might look better hanging above the floor instead of touching it.
First, if you’ve hung your drapes at a height where they’ll hit the floor, you won’t be able to fully open them. You’ll only be able to pull them partway down, which means you won’t be able to see out through the bottom half of the curtain.
Second, if you hang your drapes below the floor level, you’ll be able to see right underneath them. This makes it easier to spot dust bunnies and dirt underfoot.
Third, if you hang your curtains above the floor, you’ll be able to see right through them. This makes it harder to keep track of what’s happening outside.
Finally, if you hang your drapery panels above the floor, you won’t be able to easily clean them. Instead, you’ll have to sweep them off the floor every day.
What Do You Mean By Curtain Drop?
You may not realize it, but there’s actually a lot of confusion surrounding the term “curtain drop”. Some people believe that the distance from the top edge of the curtain to the floor should be measured at the hemline, while others believe that it should be measured from the top edge of where the curtain attaches to the curtain rod.
To avoid any confusion, let’s start by defining what we mean by “curtain drop”! We’ll define it as the distance from the top point of the curtain to the hemline. So if you measure from the top edge of your curtain rod, then your measurement will be equal to the distance from the rod to the hemline.
So which measurement method is right for you? Well, it really depends on your personal preference. Personally, I prefer to use the top edge measurement because it makes it easier to center the hemline on the window frame. However, if you don’t mind centering the hemline on the wall instead of the window frame, then you can use the hemline measurement.
Types Of Curtain Lengths
There are following six types of curtain lengths:
Sill
A sill is the shortest type of curtain length. Standard lengths are usually a half inch above the window sill. Sills are great for covering small windows. They have shorter lengths so they won’t block the furniture, heater, or counter located below it, and they have a casual and charming look.
We use this type of curtain for small windows. They are made out of fabric and come in various styles and designs. They are available in a wide variety of fabrics, including cotton, linen, silk, polyester, rayon, velvet, etc.
Apron
These apron-length curtains are usually made out of fabric that hangs down from the window frame. They are great at preventing dust and dirt from accumulating on the floor. However, if there is anything else blocking the view through the window, then the apron curtain won’t work very well.
You can also combine the two styles of curtains together. For instance, you can use an apron curtain to cover the bottom half and a valance to cover the upper half of the window frame.”
Floor
This is a great option if you want to add height to your windows without making them look messy. You’ll still be able to enjoy the view through your window, but it won’t look like a mess hanging down from the ceiling.
You can find floor-length curtains online or in stores near you. These curtains come in various lengths, including 36 inches, 42 inches, 48 inches, and 54 inches. Choose whichever length works best for your space.
Floor-length curtains are ideal for high-traffic areas such as living rooms. They give your windows a sleek and clean appearance. Plus, they keep the room feeling bigger and more spacious.
Trouser
A trouser-length curtain is a great choice if you want to add sophistication to your living space. These curtains come in lengths that are longer than the length of the floor, so they create folds or bends in the right places. This helps give your curtains a polished appearance.
These curtains work best with crisper fabrics, so they should be made out of thick materials. You’ll find that most trouser-length curtains are made out of cotton, polyester, linen, silk, or wool.
Puddle
These puddle-length curtains are long enough to cover most windows. They are luxurious and spectacular to view. You’ll find them in various sizes and styles.
They are best for rooms that you want to be used for impressing guests and family members. They are ideal for tall windows.
You can buy puddle-length curtains online or in stores. Some retailers sell them in sets, which include multiple panels. Others sell them individually.
Whether you’re planning to decorate your living room, dining room, bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, or another room, you can find beautiful puddle-length curtains online.
Breaking
This type of length is ideal for creating a subtle contrast between the floor and the window. You’ll notice that most windows have a gap between the floor and the wall. This creates a sense of space and lightness. However, if you’ve ever tried to hang curtains without any gaps, you probably noticed that they were difficult to pull down and keep closed. A break in the curtains allows air to flow through the room, making it easier to close and open the curtains.
How Can Floor Slope Impact the Length of Curtains?
When determining the length of curtains, an acceptable floor slope is essential to consider. A sloped floor can affect how the curtains hang and the overall appearance of the room. It’s crucial to measure carefully and adjust the length of the curtains to accommodate any floor slope for a polished look.
Should The Curtains Extend Beyond The Window?
Curtains should extend past the window frame by at least a couple of inches. This gives you room to pull them closed without hitting the wall behind the window. If you choose a half cafe-style curtain, then your curtains will be shorter than the window itself.
You may find yourself wondering whether or not your curtains should extend past the window. As a general rule of thumb though, yes, they should. There are exceptions to every rule, however. Some windows are very narrow and there isn’t enough space between the window frame and the wall behind it to fit any extra fabric. In those cases, you might consider hanging your curtains closer to the window.
